How It Works

The shockwave device delivers acoustic (sound) waves that interact with the affected tissue, stimulating tissue repair and cellular regeneration to relieve pain and improve motion. At Illume Physio, shockwave therapy sessions are scheduled according to specific protocols for different conditions. Typical protocols require sessions once every 3-5 days over 3-6 weeks, but your care will be tailored to your specific situation.

It’s important not to take anti-inflammatory medications during your shockwave protocol. After you have completed your shockwave therapy, we will begin an exercise program to rehab the healed muscles.

Can It Help Me?

Shockwave therapy is useful in many conditions, such as

  • Calcifications
  • Chronic tendinopathy
  • Heel spur
  • Hip pain
  • Jumper’s knee
  • Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints)
  • Plantar fasciitis

What to Expect

Our physiotherapist, Jacob Kireti, will explain the process to you before we begin, so you know what to expect. Please ask any questions along the way. There are three basic steps to your shockwave therapy session.

  1. Jacob will locate the specific area to be treated by palpating (feeling) the area to pinpoint the damaged tissue.
  2. We will apply a special gel to the area. This is needed to allow for efficient conduction of the acoustic waves through your skin.
  3. We will gently place the shockwave device on the skin over the area to be treated. You may feel slight pulses against your skin, as well as minor discomfort in the affected area.
